The action camera specialist GoPro has botched its entry into the camera drone business. The company is recalling all around 2500 devices that have been sold so far. In some rare cases, the power supply of the drones failed during operation, GoPro announced after the US market closed on Tuesday. A drone whose motors are no longer receiving power in flight crashes. The first GoPro drone with the name “Karma”, which had been developed for a long time, had been on the market for a good two weeks. Sales will be suspended until the cause of the problems is found and fixed, it said.
For GoPro, the recall is a setback in the middle of the important Christmas business. The past quarter was very weak and the company relied on the drone and a new camera model to stimulate business again. The share fell in after-hours trading by around nine percent. After the disappointing quarterly figures, the paper lost around a fifth of its value last week.
GoPro is a pioneer in the action camera business for athletes or adventurers. However, the company is now facing increased competition from cameras from other providers and smartphones. Recently there were also doubts about how big this market is. And in the camera drone business, GoPro faces several established competitors like DJI.
