After 90 seconds, the future of the battery is decided: During this time, a chip from the start-up Novum Engineering sends a short current pulse to a used battery, reads out existing data – and then calculates the state of the memory at lightning speed. “So you not only know how much remaining capacity is available, but also what purpose it can still be used for,” says Mandy Schipke, managing director of the Dresden start-up. Some batteries still have high charging capacities after their first use in electric cars or large storage systems, but have a short lifespan, while the opposite is true for others.
