Timm Niestrad’s assignment, which he is pursuing for the city of Bielefeld, is pretty clearly outlined: Digitize what is possible. “But we are having difficulties getting our own developers,” says Niestrad, who is supposed to find software solutions for the city’s various subsidiaries, including the transport operator moBiel and the electricity supplier BIenergy.
And so Niestrad recently took a step that should be familiar to many do-it-yourselfers in times of shortage of tradespeople. He laid a hand himself. Since his own programming skills are limited, he used a software platform like children from a Lego box. For the job ticket management on the moBiel website, he selected a menu interface, a login with a password – and created the portal with practically no programming effort. A good 3,000 job tickets have been managed digitally since then.
