The best drones for amateur filmmakers
DJI: Phantom 4 - The obstacle runner The latest model from the Chinese market leader surprises with intelligent functions: It follows people whom the user marks on the display and independently avoids obstacles. The camera films in 4K resolution. The battery lasts 28 minutes, five minutes longer than its predecessor. In sport mode, the Phantom now flies 72 kilometers per hour, the range of the remote control increases to five kilometers. Price: 1600 euros. Source: press
Yuneec: Typhon H - The Fail-SafeEquipped with six propellers, the new model from the Chinese manufacturer Yuneec will continue to fly even if two propellers fail. Thanks to the built-in stereo camera from chip manufacturer Intel, the drone should detect obstacles and thus avoid collisions. The landing skids fold up in flight so that they do not appear in the image of the pan camera, which films in 4K resolution. Sales start in April. Price: 1800 euros. Source: press
Lily: Lily - the selfie drone It looks like a flying egg and can be started with your free hand: the Lily drone is particularly versatile and easy to use. If the user activates a transmitter in their pocket, Lily follows them every step of the way. The plane should even be waterproof if it accidentally lands in the pool. Price: $ 919. Source: press
3D-Robotics: Solo - The Versatile Solo is the name of the drone from the US startup 3D Robotics - and it is particularly easy to connect: The connection for the camera can not only be equipped with a GoPro action camera, but also with other accessories, such as the Pixpro SP360 virtual reality camera from Kodak that records 360-degree videos. Price: From $ 999. Source: press
Parrot: Bebop - the entry-level drone Small, light and robust: the Bebop drone from Parrot is particularly recommended for beginners who want to practice flying and who want to avoid causing accidents as much as possible. In the event of a collision, the mini aircraft automatically switches off the propellers and the camera films in HD resolution. Price: 349 euros. Source: press

Dangerous is probably the wrong word. Drones or copters, as we prefer to call them, are – if used carefully – no more dangerous than cars or bicycles. Modern copters have many safety devices. Of course, copters have to be technically checked before they are launched on the market. However, it should be clear to every copter pilot that technology can fail at any time. Then it depends on his flying skills and caution so that nothing bad happens.

Danger areas are, for example, the areas around airports and the shared airspace of multicopters and low-flying helicopters, such as rescue or police helicopters, which can suddenly appear and which the multicopters have to avoid. I see the greatest danger in a lack of knowledge of the existing rules and laws, which are then interpreted differently or further tightened at the state level.

Definitive. Especially newcomers are unfortunately hardly informed about the regulations at the state or municipal level. The rules that differ from state to state create disorientation and uncertainty. Even the air law with its different air control zones is difficult to understand for the layman or the local conditions can be checked. Smartphone apps that provide GPS-based information about flight control zones can help here.

To person

The trade does the rest by advertising the enormous technical possibilities of multicopters. Unfortunately, there are often no references to the existing legal requirements that restrict precisely this. Most of the time, it is not even pointed out that special liability insurance is required for outdoor use.

With the limitation of the maximum flight altitude to 100 meters, Mr. Dobrindt wants to keep the manned airspace free and in particular to avoid encounters between copters and passenger aviation. The maximum flight altitude should ensure a safe distance from the airspace of manned aviation from an altitude of around 150 meters. On arrival and departure as well as by other road users such as helicopters or microlighters, manned air traffic is definitely possible below 150 meters. Therefore, clear rules are needed here too.

The most important drone rules at a glance

For most of them, 100 meters is the limit up to which the flight position of the copter can still be clearly identified without technical aids – and it is only allowed to steer within sight. Of course, with a separate ascent permit, flying over 100 meters will still be possible – with suitable equipment and appropriately qualified pilots.
