After an investigation, students in Munich, Stuttgart and Cologne have to spend the most money on their apartment. A 30-square-meter model apartment near the university in Munich costs € 802. This comes from the student housing report 2021 by the financial services provider MLP and the Institute of German Economy, which was published on Wednesday.

According to the model calculation, the student apartment in Stuttgart costs 750 euros warm, Cologne ranks third with a monthly price of 663 euros.

In the study, 30 study locations were compared with each other. On average, rental prices rose by around 1.8 percentage points compared to the previous year. Students have to shell out an average of 515 euros in rent. A room in a shared apartment costs 325 euros on average. However, Munich, Stuttgart and Cologne are also significantly higher here.

Rents are cheaper at university locations in eastern Germany than in the west. Students in Magdeburg pay the least: the model apartment is available for € 289. The housing supplement for Bafög recipients only covers the rental costs in the state capital of Saxony-Anhalt. According to the calculations, rooms in shared apartments for less than 325 euros are available in 13 out of 30 cities.

Board member Uwe Schroeder-Wildberg expects that the situation on the housing market for students could worsen. Despite Corona, more classroom teaching should take place again in many places – more moves to the university cities could be the result.
