ZF forecast electric drive will be number one worldwide from 2030

In just under a decade, electric drives will be the most important technology in passenger cars worldwide. The supplier ZF is assuming a 51 percent share of electrified drives in the new car market by 2030. In Europe, the company expects a 60 percent market share for plug-in hybrids and pure e-mobiles at this point in time, as ZF boss Wolf-Henning Scheider explained at the balance sheet press conference.

In the period that followed, the forecast suggests that electric drives will increasingly displace combustion engines. In 2040, its market share will be 93 percent worldwide, and 100 percent in 2050.

The supplier believes that it is well positioned for development. In 2020, the share of particularly promising technologies in research and development funds rose from 46 to 59 percent. In addition to e-mobility, these include autonomous driving and safety. ZF invested a total of 2.5 billion euros in investments. At the product level, the group relies primarily on the inverter as the central component of the power electronics for e-mobility. The aim is to become the market leader in Europe in this area. In total, the order volume for electric drive components was around 14 billion euros by the end of 2020.
